Who is Dhiraj Prasad Sahu?
Dhiraj Sahu, belonging to a prominent business and political family in Jharkhand, secured two terms in the Rajya Sabha as a member of the Congress party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Opposition for corruption, emphasizing the obligation to return every embezzled penny as raids yielded over Rs 200 crore. Jharkhand MP Dhiraj Sahu, allegedly linked to a liquor company, was unreachable when contacted, with his Ranchi office stating his unavailability.
The Income Tax department, in its continuous raids concerning tax evasion allegations against the liquor company, uncovered 156 bags filled with cash on the third consecutive day. Notably, the total recovered amount reached Rs 220 crore, with Rs 20 crore counted from the bags found in Sudapada, Bolangir district. The BJP in Odisha presented photographs of a woman minister sharing a platform with a liquor trader under investigation, suggesting complicity of local leaders and the state government.
Thursday’s raids at the Baldeo Sahu & Group of Companies’ Bolangir office resulted in the seizure of around Rs 200 crore in cash, marking one of the largest cash seizures by the Income Tax department in Odisha, according to former IT commissioner Sarat Chandra Dash. IT department DG Sanjay Bahadur is overseeing the operations, and no arrests have been made thus far.
How much money did the IT investigators discover from the ongoing raids?
IT investigators utilized multiple note-counting machines to tally the total cash recovered during raids conducted over the past three days. The IT department carried out searches at nearly half a dozen locations associated with Congress MP Dhiraj Prasad Sahu, spanning Ranchi, Lohardaga, and Odisha. Meanwhile, simultaneous raids are ongoing in West Bengal.
Various companies linked to Sahu’s relatives have surfaced, including Baldev Sahu Infra Private Limited (specializing in Fly Ash Bricks), Kwality Bottlers Private Limited, and Kishore Prasad Bijay Prasad Beverages Private Limited. The searches encompassed residences, offices, and a distillery located in Sargipali, Sundargarh city, on Wednesday.
The IT team searched the corporate office of Boudh Distillery Pvt Ltd in Palasapalli, Bhubaneswar, along with the homes of specific company officials, the company’s factory and office in Boudh, and the Ranisati Rice Mill. Officials quoted by news agency PTI stated that the total amount of money discovered would exceed ₹200 crore. This sum was found stashed in almirahs at the premises of Boudh Distillery Private Limited in Balangir district.
The BJP has sharply criticized the Congress over the IT raid following PM Modi’s tweet about the reports. Union minister Anurag Thakur asserted that this is why Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi oppose demonetization. He remarked on the ongoing counting, broken counting machines, and the unending stash of unaccounted cash, stating that Congress, corruption, and cash are synonymous.
