The Indian media landscape has faced criticism for its alleged partiality towards the government, with the mainstream press labeled “godi media” (lapdog media) due to its reluctance to question the authorities.

This media complacency has coincided with increased crackdowns on journalists who criticize the government.

In response, a new wave of social media creators has stepped up to hold power accountable through satirical comedy, catchy songs, and engaging videos, bringing to light issues that traditional news outlets often ignore.

One of these creators, Dr. Medusa (a pseudonym for an English professor known as the “Neighborhood English teacher”), gained attention for her satirical sketches.

She often presents her content in a poker-faced style reminiscent of Doordarshan, the Indian state-run broadcaster.

Other social media satirists, like Neha Singh Rathore, a folk singer, have faced backlash for challenging the government.

Rathore, who composes political satire in her native Bhojpuri, was served a notice by the Uttar Pradesh police for questioning the state’s chief minister in a song.

Dhruv Rathee, a popular 29-year-old YouTuber based in Germany, has also seen his influence grow. His videos dissect various political topics, from electoral bonds to religious polarization, resonating with a younger audience.

Despite the government’s increasing control over social media through regulations like the IT Rules 2021, satirists and YouTubers like Rathee and Dr. Medusa continue to challenge the status quo, often at great personal risk.

While the mainstream media often remains silent on topics like corruption and s*x abuse involving ruling party politicians, social media creators are more vocal, holding those in power to account.
