BBMP chief engineer CM Shivakumar has passed away after succumbing to injuries sustained from a fire breakout on August 11, check out his biography, cause of death, family, funeral rites, tributes, and more below

The fire breakout occurred at the civic body’s Quality Assurance Laboratory, and Shivakumar succumbed to his injuries yesterday at 6:59 pm Wednesday at a private hospital in Bengaluru.

According to official reports, Shivakumar succumbed to “sepsis with refractory septic shock” and “multiple organ dysfunction syndrome”. The deceased had received about 25 per cent burn injuries alongside inhalation injuries.

Official statement from the hospital

The hospital where CM Shivakumar was admitted before he passed away gave the following statement:

Mr. C M SHIVAKUMAR 45 Years male, came to our hospital with alleged history of accidental thermal burns and sustained burns injury to bilateral upper limbs, chest, face and neck (diagnosed as 25 % burns with inhalational injury, ARDS with Type II Respiratory Failure with high Fio2 requirement, Sepsis with septic shock).”

According to the statement, CM Shivakumar first took initial treatment at another hospital. However, he was admitted here due to severe hypoxia, hypercarbia, anaemia, thrombocytopenia, sepsis with septic shock, AKI and Grade-3-4 burns.

CM Shivakumar biography and family

CM Shivakumar was the chief engineer of the BBMP’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance Division. He was a native of Nanjangud, Karnataka, and started out as the assistant executive engineer of the BBMP in 2005. He was married to Uma Maheshwari and had two daughters together named Vibha Nidhi (12) and Nirvi Neha (10). Shivakumar was 45 years old at the time of his passing.

CM Shivakumar funeral rites

Once the a post-mortem examination is conducted at Victoria Hospital, Shivakumar’s body will be taken back to his residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. The family will then take his mortal remains to Nanjangud on Thursday for the final rites.

Cause of the fire

Interestingly, engineer in chief BS Prahallad, still hasn’t submitted a detailed report about the cause of the fire incident. According to preliminary investigation, officials and engineers did not follow the standard operating procedures while conducting the bitumen extract test.

Tributes come pouring in

Upon hearing about the news of Shivakumar’s death, tributes have come pouring in for the deceased. In a message, BBMP commissioner Tushar Giri Nath stated:

I express deepest condolences to the family of Shivakumar. It is an irreparable loss. Beyond the financial package, the civic body will discuss with the state government to announce a special package for his family.”

Bengaluru Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also took to social media and stated:

Saddened to hear the news of the death of CM Shivakumar, Chief Engineer of Quality Control and Quality Assurance Department, who was seriously injured in the fire incident at the Quality Control Laboratory of BBMP. I pray that the soul of the deceased may rest in peace and his family may find strength to bear the grief.”

Bengaluru police book three persons in connection with the fire BREAKOUT

Following the shocking BBMP fire breakout, which led to the death of CM Shivakumar, Bengaluru police have booked three people. Two of them are engineers, Ananda and Swamy, while the third person is Suresh Kumar, a BBMP official. Police have booked the trio on negligence under IPC Sections 337 (causing hurt by negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). Police are still undergoing further investigations over the exact details of the incident.
