In the summer of 2020, Vivell was hired by Leipzig as the technical director after making an impression in a variety of positions there. Prior to signing with the Austrian club, he played for Hoffenheim for five years. The German worked first for the club’s junior squad as a video analyst before working his way up to a first-team position.
Although he had also worked as a match commentator, his ultimate position at the club was as a scout. In November 2015, he came to Salzburg, where he served as the director of scouting.
Vivell advanced within the Red Bull organisation after doing an outstanding job at Salzburg, joining Leipzig in 2020, where he was in charge of the “strategic direction of squad planning in accordance with an overall transfer strategy.”
Vivell worked alongside Freund at Salzburg, where they unearthed Manchester City sensation Erling Haaland and Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mane. During his time as head of scouting, Salzburg signed the likes of Patson Daka, Erling Haaland and Karim Adeyemi. The recruitment during the 35 year old time at RB Leipzig was largely impressive – with the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Andre Silva and Angelino joining.
