Zhang Ziyu is a young and upcoming college basketball player, who hails from Shandong Province, China. She is currently just 17 years old and has already drawn comparisons to NBA legend Yao Ming due to her staggering height. Ziyu’s mother was also a senior international basketball player.
Height
Despite being just 17 years old, Zhang Ziyu stands at a towering height of 7’3” or 2.22 meters. The Chinese teenager undoubtedly gets her ‘tall’ genes from her parents who are both tall as well. Zhang’s father stands at 2.13 meters while her mother stands at 1.98 meters. According to reports, Ziyu was already 5’3 tall during her first grade and had grown up to 6’10 by the sixth grade. She is currently the tallest player to ever play in any FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup.
Both her parents played basketball and her father stands at 2.13 M and her mother, Yu Ying, a former member of the Chinese national team, is at 1.98 M. Zhang’s weight isn’t known.
College career
Ziyu first gained prominence after her appearance in the 2021 Chinese National Championship Finals. She caught a lot of attention for being the tallest player and ended the tournament with a score of 42 points, 25 rebounds, and six blocks. More recently, the upcoming college basketball player came into the limelight once again in the ongoing FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup 2024 campaign. The 17-year-old player made her debut appearance against New Zealand, scoring 36 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

Yao Ming, whom Zhang Ziyu has drawn comparisons to, is a legendary former Chinese basketball player who stood at a height of 7 feet 6 inches. Ming started off his NBA career after the Houston Rockets picked him in the 2002 draft. The now 43-year-old ended up playing with the team up until 2011. During his final season in the league, he was the tallest active player.
Throughout his career, Ming earned several career highlights including achieving the NBA All-Star 8-times and 2-time All-NBA Second Team. Following his retirement, the Houston Rockets chose to retire his jersey number 11 in 2017, in honor of the player.
