On Thursday night, the Chicago Bears selected tight end Colston Loveland from the University of Michigan as the tenth overall choice in the first round.

The Bears franchise had only selected a tight end in the first round three times since 1960. Colston Loveland joins Greg Olsen and “Iron Mike” Ditka in that elite company.

Loveland grew up on a farm in the little town of Bliss, Idaho, which has fewer than 300 residents. Raising sheep and herding horses as a child, he also enjoyed football and basketball. He was made to play by his older brother, starting with flag football in the first grade and progressing to tackle football by the fourth.

21-year Colston Loveland was raised on a farm in Bliss, Idaho, and was born on April 9, 2004 and is 6ft 5in tall with him weighing 245 pounds.

Loveland is the son of Chad Loveland and Rachel Faulkner. His father, runs a ranch supply while mother Rachel Faulkner was a top-notch athlete herself. Coston is currently single and unmarried.

His brother, Cayden, set several receiving records at Gooding and plays wide receiver at Carroll College of the NAIA while Colston enrolled in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, majoring in General Studies at Michigan.

Coston excelled in football and basketball while attending the Gooding High School in Gooding, Idaho. At Gooding, he caught 235 receptions for 3,141 yards and 35 touchdowns, including 91 as a sophomore.

He then played college football for the Michigan Wolverines as a tight end, winning a national championship in 2023 and earning All-American honors in 2024.

Colston Loveland career

Colston Loveland committed to play football for the University of Michigan in July 2021. Early in January 2022, he enrolled after graduating. He scored his first touchdown as a college student in the start of the third quarter against Ohio State after catching a 45-yard ball from J. J. McCarthy.

The following week, he helped Michigan capture its second straight conference title by catching a touchdown in the Big Ten Championship Game. Loveland participated in and started all one of Michigan’s 15 games as a sophomore in 2023.

He had four receiving touchdowns, 649 receiving yards, and 45 catches at the end of the season. The coaches selected him to the All-Big Ten first team, and the media selected him to the second team.

Loveland joined Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr. and Penn State’s Tyler Warren as one of three finalists for the 2024 John Mackey Award, which is granted to the finest tight end in college football. He joined 2016 winner Jake Butt as the second Wolverine to ever make it to the finals.

Loveland skipped his senior year and the ReliaQuest Bowl in favour of declaring for the 2025 NFL draft on December 13, 2024. With a 35–6 team record, two Big Ten titles, one national title, two All-American selections, two All-Big Ten selections, and the school’s single-season reception record, he concluded his time at the University of Michigan. He also tied for second among Michigan tight ends in terms of career touchdowns, third in terms of lifetime receptions, and third in terms of career receiving yards across his three years.
