India’s chess teams created history on Sunday at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest when they took home gold in both the women’s and open divisions. In order to improve their bronze from 2022, the open team of D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Harikrishna Pentala defeated Slovenia in round 11.

In order to complete an incredible campaign, the women’s team, Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Tania Sachdev—also exchanged their bronze for gold in the final round.

38-year-old Pentala Harikrishna was born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India on 10 May 1986. His grandfather Ranga Rao was his first chess instructor and taught him the game when he was 4 years old. He is a college dropout from an open university. Pentala got married to Nadezda Stojanovic who is also a chess player.

Pentala Harikrishna career

Having won the Indian Under-08 (1993), Under-10 (1995), Under-14 (1999), Under-15 (1998), and Under-18 (1998) titles, Pentala Harikrishna was a highly successful juvenile athlete. In 1999, he took home the Under 18 title from the Commonwealth Chess Championship. In 1996, he took home the World Under-10 Championship.

At the age of 14 years and 5 months, he was selected to compete for India in the 2000 Chess Olympiad, where he achieved his first Grandmaster norm with a score of 6.5 out of 11 rounds. Soon after, the second and third norms were recorded, with a strong 6.5/13 finish good for fifth place in Corus Group B and a shared seventh place finish with 7/11 at the Asian Individual Championship.

After losing to Boris Gelfand in the last round of the 2014 Tata Steel Masters, Harikrishna finished seventh with 5.5/11 in January of that year. Shortly after, he tied for 12th place at Gibraltar with a score of 7/10. After placing ninth in a tiebreak at Gibraltar with a score of 7.5/10, Harikrishna went on to win various team competitions in 2015, including the World Team Championships where he finished with a score of 5/9.


He won the Chess960 event, which was a component of the Biel chess tournament, in July 2020 with 5.5 points out of 7 games. The players were divided from one another by plexiglass due to COVID-19. Additionally, he competed for India in the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020, where both Russia and India took home gold.

Pentala Harikrishna participated in the FIDE Grand Prix 2022 over the months of February and March of 2022. In 2023, Hari supported Ju Wenjun as her second in the Women’s World Championship match.
