Though disappointed with her performance in Budapest, seasoned Indian chess player Harika Dronavalli ultimately fulfilled her aim of capturing the Chess Olympiad championship.

India created history on Sunday, September 22, when the men’s and women’s teams defeated Slovenia and Azerbaijan in the championship round to win their first-ever gold medals. Harika Dronavalli, 33, demonstrated her technical skill on the top board for the women’s squad. In the meantime, 18-year-old Divya Deshmukh won her individual gold medal on the third board by outperforming Govhar Beydullayeva.

33-year-old Harika Dronavalli was born on born 12 January 1991. Harika was born to Ramesh and Swarna Dronavalli. She went to the Sri Venkateswara Bala Kuteer school. Her father is employed at a Panchayat Raj subdivision in Mangalagiri as a deputy executive engineer.

Her elder sister, Anusha is married to Telugu film director K. S. Ravindra.

She began playing chess at an early age and took home a medal in the national tournament for under-9 players. She then won a silver medal in the under-10 girls’ international youth chess competition. After that, she started studying under coach NVS Ramaraju, who helped her hone her skills. After Koneru Humpy, she became the second Indian woman to hold the title of grandmaster.

Born in the Guntur district of the Southeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in 1991, Dronavalli won the silver medal at the World Youth Girl’s U10 Championships in 2000.

In August 2018, she married engineer and businessman Karteek Chandra, a resident of Hyderabad after six months of dating. On August 24, 2022, she gave birth to her first child.

Harika Dronavalli career

Indian grand master Harika Dronavalli is one of the best female chess players and a three-time bronze medallist in the Women’s World Chess Championship. She holds three global youth titles in the junior girls, under-18, and under-12 divisions, and at the age of 18, she won the Indian women’s national chess tournament.

After GM Humpy Koneru, Harika became the second woman in India to achieve the title of grandmaster in 2009. Harika started ranking among the top 25 women on FIDE the following year, and she moved up to the top 10 the following year. She hasn’t left either list since.

Harika is quite good in positional combat. At the 2020 Lausanne Grand Prix, she decisively defeated the current women’s world champion with patient maneuvering, demonstrating the concept in action.
