Born on May 29, 2006, Gukesh D, whose full name is Gukesh Dommaraju is an Indian chess grandmaster and he is 18th world chess champion. The chess player was born in Chennai into a Telugu family, who hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Gukesh’s father, Dr. Rajinikanth is an ENT surgeon and his mother, Dr. Padma is a microbiologist. He began playing chess at the tender age of 7 and studied at the Velammal Vidyalaya School in Mel Ayanambakkam, Chennai. He is coached by chess GM and coach Vishnu Prasanna V. While his IQ isn’t known, it is likely well above 100.

Standing at 5 feet 7 inches, Gukesh weighs 58Kg and has a sibling, Rameshbabu Vaishali, who’s also a chess player. The chess player is a follower of the Hindu religion.

Career

He started playing chess in 2013 for one hour, three-days a week and started participating in various chess tournaments. In 2015, he won Under-9 Asian School Chess Championship.

Later, he emerged victorious in World Youth Chess Championship in 2018 in the Under-12 category. In December 2024, he emerged winner at the World Chess Championship 2024 which was held in Canada.

This victory of Gukesh at the tournament has made him the second Indian to hold the World Chess Championship. In 2022, he created history by defeating reigning world champion, Magnus Carlsen.

At the Asian Games, he won a silver medal, and has grabbed one team and two individual gold medals, and two bronze team medals at the Olympics.

Gukesh’s net worth is estimated to be $1.5 million, approximately Rs. 8.26 crore. After winning the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, the chess player received a prize money of $2.5 million.
