Cheryl Reeve bio

Cheryl Reeve is an American basketball coach who was born on September 20, 1966 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, USA. She is currently 57-years-old and serves as the President of Basketball Operations for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA. Throughout her career, Reeve has coached the Lynx to four league championships.

Reeve was born into a military family to parents, Rae Reeve, and Larry Reeve. She and her family moved around when she was a child before eventually settling in Washington Township, southern New Jersey when Cheryl was a teenager. She has two siblings named Tom Reeve, and Larry Reeve Jr.

College basketball career

Before becoming a renowned basketball coach, Cheryl Reeve played four years of collegiate basketball at La Salle University in Philadelphia. During her time there, she led the team to two NCAA tournaments. She also still holds the school record for most games started with 110. Reeve also ranks fourth in the school history for most career assists with 420.

Coaching career

Cheryl Reeve started out her career as an assistant coach at La Salle University. She had stayed there for a master’s degree after graduating as a player. She eventually became an assistant coach at George Washington University after two years. After working as a collegiate coach for 12 years, she eventually moved to the WNBA.

She first worked as an assistant coach for several WNBA teams across nine years, which include the Charlotte Sting, the Cleveland Rockers and the Detroit Shock. She later took over as general manager and director of personnel for the Shock for several years.

Cheryl Reeve then took up the role of head coach of the Minnesota Lynx in 2010 and has since served in that role. After starting of her first season with a 13-21 record, she eventually turned the team around and led them to an WNBA title the following season in 2011. A few years later in 2017, Reeve took over as the general manager of the Lynx. She is currently the longest active coach in the WNBA.

Alongside her role in the WNBA, Cheryl also served as an assistant coach for the USA Basketball women’s national team. Reeve’s first competition with them was the 2014 FIBA World Cup. She eventually helped the team secure two World Cup wins and two Olympic medals. During the end of 2021, Cheryl Reeve took over the team as the head coach from Dawn Staley. She currently has a contract that runs till the end of 2024.

Titles and achievements

Throughout her career, the veteran coach has won quite a number of titles and achievements. She has won four gold medals as an assistant coach for USA Basketball, which includes two Olympic gold medals (2016, 2020) and two FIBA World Cup titles (2014, 2016). She also won her first gold medal as the team’s head coach during the 2022 FIBA World Cup.
