Is Kellyman Merely a Pawn?
With Ian Maatsen set to move to Aston Villa in a separate deal, some skeptics suggest that Kellyman is merely a pawn in a strategy by both clubs to avoid breaching Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by balancing the books before the financial year’s end on June 30.
Regardless of the underlying motives, Kellyman has made headlines and joined Chelsea’s first-team setup. But who exactly is Chelsea’s newest teenage recruit?
About Omari Kellyman
For the unfamiliar, Omari Jamian Kellyman, born on September 15, 2005, is a professional footballer. Standing 6’3”, Kellyman plays as an attacking midfielder for Premier League club Chelsea.
Born in England, he has represented both England and Northern Ireland at youth international levels. Kellyman was born in Derby to a Northern Irish mother and a Ghanaian father and is a Christian by religion. As a child, he attended Landau Forte College along with his brothers Jahmi and Mehki where he went to the primary, econdary and sixth-form schools.
The importance of hard work was passed on by his Northern Irish mother, Paula, and his Jamaican dad, Marlon. ‘Growing up, I remember my dad would be working two jobs and always on the go,’ Omari had revealed.
While his Chelsea salary isn’t known, he was paid £800 per week and £41,600 per year at Aston Villa. The middle of three brothers (aged 20, 18 and 14), Omari played football in his garden and with friends on the streets of Derby.
Career
He joined the Derby County academy in 2012 and progressed through its ranks, making the bench for an EFL Championship game against AFC Bournemouth on November 21, 2021, though he did not play.
In March 2022, after ten years with Derby County, Kellyman joined the academy of Premier League side Aston Villa, with the club reportedly paying £600,000 in compensation.
He signed his first professional contract in September of the same year, having already featured for the under-21 side in the EFL Trophy. Academy manager Mark Harrison expressed the club’s delight with his development.
Having represented Northern Ireland at both under-17 and under-18 levels, Kellyman switched his international allegiance to England in September 2023.
On 1 September 2023, Kellyman received a call-up for England under-19s for matches against Germany and Switzerland. He made his U19 debut during a 1–0 defeat to Germany in Oliva on 6 September 2023.
In May 2024, Kellyman was called up by England under-20s for the first time but was later replaced by Romain Esse.
