Sonia Bompastor, born June 8, 1980, in Blois, France, is currently managing Chelsea in the English Women’s Super League after the club agreed a deal for her from Lyon but her salary at the club isn’t known. Notably, she holds the unique distinction of being the first person to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League both as a player and a manager. She was a two-time recipient of the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Female Player of the Year award and, during her time in the U.S. Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league, earned Player of the Month and All-Star honors.
Bompastor’s football journey began in 1988 at US Mer, followed by a stint at US Thoury in 1992, the same year she earned a place at the Clairefontaine academy. After training there, she moved to Tours EC and later joined ESOF Vendée La Roche-sur-Yon in 2000. Later, she joined Montpellier, where she guided the team to league titles in 2004 and 2005. Her success at Montpellier earned her a move to Lyon, where she contributed to domestic wins and the club’s 2011 UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph.
Bompastor’s international career spanned 13 years, during which she earned 156 caps for France, scoring 19 goals.
