Che Flores is the first nonbinary trans referee in the NBA who was born on July 18, 1979 and hails from Himland Park, Los Angeles. Flores announced her decision in a GQ story on Monday. In an interview with GQ, Che talked about the freedom that comes with being openly non-binary:
When I started refereeing, you had to look a certain way.
Che further said:
“This is the first time I’m comfortable expressing myself through my own fashion and not having to worry about it. I feel one hundred percent myself now.”
Flores spent ten seasons in the WNBA and nine in the G-league as an official. They also have previous experience working in a number of college competitions. Prior to this season, they officiated twelve games during the regular season as a non-staff member.
