The 21-year-old British national Charlotte May Lee was detained earlier this month at Bandaranaike Airport in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, on suspicion of attempting to smuggle suitcases containing “kush,” a lethal new drug that originated in West Africa and kills about a dozen people in Sierra Leone every week.
South London native Lee says she was unaware that the pills, valued at an estimated $3.3 million, were in her suitcase.

On Monday, May 12, 2025, Charlotte flew in from Bangkok and landed at Colombo International Airport in Sri Lanka. She was arrested on arrival on suspicion of smuggling kush worth almost £1.5 million that was discovered in her suitcase.
In 2022, Kush, a strong cannabis strain laced with synthetic and harmful substances like formalin, acetone, and tramadol, was first discovered in Sierra Leone.
Charlotte could spend 20 to 25 years in Sri Lanka’s maximum-security Welikada Prison as a result of her alleged possession and arrest, which is the country’s largest kush raid ever.
Lee, 21, from Coulsdon, south London, was apprehended in the country’s capital Columbo after she was caught with 46kg of the synthetic strain of cannabis kush, worth an estimated £1.2 million, in her suitcase. The former TUI stewardess had arrived into the country from Bangkok, Thailand, before being taken into custody by police at Bandaranaike Airport on Monday and has since been detained in the woman’s ward of Negombo Prison just north of the capital.
The Londoner is facing one charge of possessing illegal drugs and another of importing illegal drugs into the country but has claimed that the drugs were planted in her bag along with refusing to eat the prison food.
Who is Charlotte May Lee?
Charlotte May Lee, a 21-year-old beauty technician who was training in eyelash extensions and worked in Chipstead, Surrey, prior to her arrest overseas, is originally from Coulsdon, South London.
Up until almost a year ago, Charlotte was an air hostess for TUI before taking on her most recent position as a nail technician.
Lee had flown out to Thailand in April to celebrate her 21st birthday courtesy of her older sister, who was meeting her from Australia, where she lives and had previously enjoyed a summer contract as a cabin attendant for Tui but she had been training as a beauty therapist specialising in eyelashes. The details and names of her parents and family members aren’t known though but she is in contact with them as per her lawyer.
She remains under investigation and her next court appearance will be on July 13, 2025.

Her Instagram highlights are full of photos taken in places all over the world, including Egypt, Cape Verde, and the Caribbean, as well as in European locations like the Greek islands and Ibiza.
Charlotte, a seasoned traveller, went to Thailand for the first time to celebrate her 21st birthday with her older sister.
Friends claim that Charlotte “wanted to work” in Thailand when she returned from her first trip, and family members believe she discussed meeting a man during her subsequent trip.
