The doctors were perplexed, families were left in the dark as dead bodies were piled up in hospitals across New Jersey. Somerset Medical Center provided care to 13 victims, Saint Barnabas Medical Center provided care to one victim, Warren Hospital provided care to three victims, and Hunterdon Medical Center provided care to five victims. The remaining victim did not receive care anywhere.

When the police eventually discovered that Charles Cullen had been the victims’ nurse, they became aware of the particular trait the victims shared.

In 2003, the West Orange native admitted to police that he had injected deadly drugs into IV fluid bags without a doctor’s prescription. He turned off ventilators at random and medicated patients without a doctor’s prescription. Investigators claim that Cullen was one of the most prolific serial killers in history, having murdered more than two dozen people, while some experts think he may have killed as many as 400 people in all.

Who Is Charles Cullen And His Medical Career?

The Independent claims that West Orange resident Cullen, who was born in 1960, grew raised in a working-class area. He left high school in 1978 and enlisted in the Navy. Soon after his discharge, Cullen enrolled in and later finished a nursing programme at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. The next year, he started working as a nurse at the burn unit of Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. A year later, he allegedly killed his first person.

On June 11, 1988, he administered a deadly IV drug overdose to a patient at Saint Barnabas Hospital. Cullen eventually confessed to murdering several more individuals there, including one AIDS patient who died after receiving too much insulin.

After hospital officials started looking into tainted IV bags, Cullen left Saint Barnabas in 1992. A month later, Cullen accepted a position at Phillipsburg’s Warren Hospital, where three elderly women who had overdosed on digoxin were killed.

Later, Cullen worked at Allentown, Pennsylvania’s Morristown Memorial Hospital, and Liberty Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was connected to deaths that happened at Easton Hospital in Easton, Pennsylvania; Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown; and St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

2003 saw the eventual arrest of Cullen. He told the detectives that in addition to the 29 murders, he had also killed up to 40 individuals. In 2013, Cullen appeared on television for the first time to speak with “60 Minutes.” During the conversation, Cullen said he thought the deaths were acts of charity.

“I believed that people were no longer experiencing pain. So in a way, I felt like I was doing something to help,” he said at the time. The families of Cullen’s victims at Warren Hospital, Somerset Medical Center, and Hunterdon Medical Center, who had filed wrongful-death lawsuits against the hospitals, reached a private settlement in 2008.

These hospitals, together with Saint Barnabas and St. Luke’s, paid an unknown sum to resolve lawsuits involving the deaths of 22 of Cullen’s victims.

The Independent claims that Cullen is currently serving 11 consecutive life sentences for the 22 murders committed in New Jersey. For his acts, he can be sentenced to six more life terms in Pennsylvania. Upon release from New Jersey custody, his earliest likely date would be June 10, 2388, according to the Department of Corrections. According to inmate records, he is being held at Trenton’s New Jersey State Prison.

Cullen has gained notoriety due to the October 26, 2022, anticipated release of the Netflix movie “The Good Nurse,” which is based on his life. Eddie Redmayne, an Oscar-winning actor, is portraying the ill-famed serial killer.
