Celal Şengör, a geologist, has become a subject of interest on social media after his warning of a possible earthquake in Turkey’s southern Hatay province came true. On Monday, two earthquakes of magnitudes 6.4 and 5.8 struck the area, which followed the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes earlier this month.
During an interview before the recent earthquakes, Şengör had predicted the possibility of an earthquake in the region, stating that “an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 may occur in the region.” He also warned that aftershocks often follow major earthquakes and stressed the importance of being prepared.

Who is Celal Şengör?
Celal Şengör is a Turkish geologist. He has been in the news because his prediction about recent earthquakes proves to be right and is getting viral on social media.
His full name is Ali Mehmet Celâl Şengör. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey on March 24, 1955. His family is an immigrant family who originally hails from Rumelia.
After completing his schooling, Celal Şengör did his graduation from Robert College, Istanbul. Afterward, he enrolled in the State University of New York in Albany, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in science in 1978. In addition, he holds doctoral degrees in philosophy and science.
He is married and his wife’s name is Oya Maltepe. They both are the parents of one child named Asım Şengör.
He is currently 67 years old.
His career
Celal Şengör currently holds a position as a faculty member in the Department of Geological Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. Because of his outstanding contributions to the field of geology, he becomes a member of esteemed scientific organizations, including the American Philosophical Society, the United States National Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
His expertise in his field has garnered him numerous accolades and awards, including the Gustav-Steinmann-Medaille, the highest scientific award presented by the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft-Geologische Vereinigung (German Geological Society-Geological Association). He is also the second Turkish professor to be elected as a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, following in the footsteps of professor ordinarius Mehmet Fuat Köprülü.
Apart from his academic and scientific pursuits, Celal Şengör also writes a popular science column in Cumhuriyet, one of Turkey’s oldest and most respected newspapers. In recognition of his vast knowledge and achievements in the field of geology, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Neuchâtel in 1988.
