With 78 minutes remaining in the game, which Colombia won 2-0, Phair entered at the age of 16 years and 26 days, breaking the previous tournament record set by Nigeria’s Ifeanyi Chiejine, who was eight days older at the time.
Phair’s parents, a South Korean mother and an American father, moved the family to the US when she was just an infant. The teenage forward, a Pingry School player who had previously trained at the Players Development Academy in New Jersey, attended a U.S. camp last year but opted to represent her own country instead, making her the first player of mixed ancestry to do so.
Who is Casey Phair?
South Korean-born association football player Casey Yu-Jin Phair was born on June 29, 2007, and now calls the United States home. She is the first player of mixed racial descent to be selected for the South Korean women’s national squad.
A look at Casey Phair’s international career
Phair began her playing career for the South Korean under-17 team. She also had the chance to train with the USWNT at a training camp last year. She nonetheless made the decision to declare for South Korea, and her incredible five goals in two games during the under-17s Asian Cup qualifying put her on the radar of Colin Bell’s senior team.
She was invited to a training camp with the senior team prior to the World Cup, and she impressed Bell enough that he included her in the final 23-player team for the competition in Australia and New Zealand. Reporters are told by Bell that he will try to shield her from the spotlight and media attention she will be subjected to as a record holder:
I know as the first mixed race player for Korea, men and women, it’s a highlight, it’s something new.”
Bell further told the reporters:
But as far as I’m concerned she’s still a kid and it’s my duty to protect her so she can blossom and really fulfil her potential. We’re taking care of her, she’s taken very well to the team. She’s in the squad on merit. She deserves, on her performance, to be selected.”
