The Miami Marlins have now become the first major sports organization in the United States to appoint a female head and have two women at the face of its front office.

Just two years back in November 2020, the Marlins hired Kim Ng as the franchise’s General Manager.

O’Connor Shares Her Response

Following the announcement on Monday, O’Connor gave a speech where she shared about her new role and her career. She shared how she wants to be a role model for young girls, and remind them that they too can attain successful careers like her, especially because she did not have role models when growing up.

O’Connor is just the second woman to lead an MLB franchise as the president. Recently, Catie Griggs was appointed as manager of the Seattle Mariners.

Caroline O’Connor Brief Bio And Education

Caroline O’Connor grew up in Freehold Township, New Jersey, where she played several sports like softball, basketball, and tennis in her high school.

O’Connor acquired her bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science at Rutgers before landing a job at IBM. She later joined UBS, after which she received an MBA from New York University.

She and her husband reside in Coral Gables with their two son. Her salary with the Marlins.

Caroline O’Connor Career Highlights And Achievements

Caroline O’Connor has had quite a successful career and has made some effective role transitions across different companies. She first started out her career as a senior IT specialist at IBM form 2000 to 2006. She then moved on to UBS Investment Bank as Director from 2006 to 2012.

O’Connor also served as the Managing director at Morgan Stanley from 2012 till 2017. Following which, she joined the Miami Marlins as their Chief operating officer back in 2017 till present. In 2021 the South Florida Business Journal named Caroline O’Connor as an Influential Businesswoman.

Marlins Owner Makes Statement

Following the new development, the Marlins chairman and principal owner, Bruce Sherman also shared his statements. Sherman revealed how the franchise is to have someone with Caroline’s business acumen and vision leading the day-to-day business operations of the team.

He further shared that O’Connor’s passion and drive for success are unmatched in the game and the South Florida market. He added that under her leadership, the Marlins will continue to grow towards their goal of sustained success. Sherman was also hopeful that the organization will be able to strategize additional new ventures to grow the business and enhance brand recognition under O’Connor.

Derek Jeter’s Legacy

O’Connor joined the Marlins in 2017 when the then CEO Derek Jeter, was a member of the ownership group that assumed control over the Miami Marlins back in 2017. She joined the Marlins as a senior vice president and chief of staff under Jeter.

She was soon promoted to the position of chief operating officer in 2019. O’Connor shared how it was “A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” when Jeter called her to join the team.

Although Jeter has now stepped down from his role in the team, two of his most important appointments, Ng and O’Connor are in charge of overseeing the franchise and its vision. O’Connor will manage the franchise’s off-field business, while Ng will manage the on-field business.

Rise Of Women Executives In Baseball

Baseball has seen a rise of women executives and their ever-increasing influence in baseball leadership. Besides O’Connor several other female executives have risen up in executive roles. Catie Griggs from Seattle is the manager of the Seattle Mariners.

Laura Day serves as the executive vice president and chief business officer for the Minnesota twins. Kellie Fischer serves as the executive vice president and chief financial officer of the MLB team, Texas Rangers.
