The tragic incident took place after the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir police collaborated together to initiate a search operation, leading to a fierce gunfight.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by an X account of Knights Corps, which took to the platform and penned, “Op Assar: Update. Search for the terrorists continues amid heavy firefight. One officer has been injured while leading the search party. War-like stores have been recovered as operations continue.”

For the curious, Captain Deepak Singh was from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, of the Indian Army. He was leading the operation in Shivgarh Dhar, Assar, when he sustained injuries. Though, he was evacuated to a nearby hospital, however, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

In the past 40 days, eleven security personnel, including a CRPF jawan, have lost their lives fighting terrorists in the Doda and Kathua districts of Jammu. Among those martyred were two Army Captains.

Captain Deepak Singh has two sisters and the elder sister lives in Kerala, who is also married to an Indian Army solider. Singh’s father is an ex-Uttarakhand Police Inspector and his family had shifted had relocated from Kerala to Dehradun.

25-year-old Captain Deepak Singh, a resident of Dehradun, was posted as a Signal Officer in the 48th National Rifles of the Indian Army and was also a brilliant hockey player.

Captain Deepak’s family lives in Doon Race Course and his body will be brought to Doon on 15th August.

What Exactly Happened?

Security forces launched a counter-terrorism operation on Tuesday night in the Akar forests, near the Patnitop tourist destination, which straddles the border between Udhampur and Doda districts.

By Wednesday morning, heavy gunfire erupted as security personnel confronted the terrorists hiding in the forested area. In the mountainous districts of Jammu, terrorists have increasingly launched ambush attacks against the army, security forces, and civilians.

Reportedly, during the ongoing operations, one terrorist was injured, and a US-made M4 carbine along with ammunition was recovered from the encounter site on Wednesday morning.

The encounter with the terrorists began at 7:12 p.m. on Tuesday but had to be suspended overnight. Security forces suspect that the same group of terrorists had previously engaged them in the Akar forest of Patnitop, as the ridge leads to Shivgarh Dhar in Assar.

Since June 9, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet began their third term, the Jammu region has been shaken by a series of terror attacks.

The Ministry of Home Affairs recently informed the Lok Sabha that 28 people, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in 11 terror-related incidents and 24 counter-terror operations so far this year.
