The 27-year-old Korean-Canadian, a top contender in the men’s breaking event on Saturday, delivered a stellar performance in the finals against France’s Danny Dann, legally known as Danish Civil, who bagged a silver medal.

Meanwhile, American breaker Victor Montalvo, secured the bronze medal defeating Japan’s Shigekix, legally known as Shigeyuki Nakarai. In an thrilling breaking event, both Phil and Dany began their day in Group B, one of four groups totaling 16 breakers.

The two advanced through the Top 8 knockout bracket to face each other in the finals. About Philip Kim

Born on January 25, 1997, Philip Kim, better known as Phil Wizard, is a Korean-Canadian breaking artist but his height isn’t known. He won the men’s gold medal at the Summer Olympics 2024 and the World Championship 2022 in breaking.

Kim, born to Korean parents in Toronto, Canada, grew up in Vancouver, where he attended Magee Secondary School. He often practiced breaking moves in school hallways and eventually left university to pursue breaking full-time.

Nickname Meaning

Kim’s passion for breaking ignited in 2009 after watching the Now or Never crew perform street shows in downtown Vancouver. His stage name, Phil Wizard, emerged accidentally when people began shortening his introduction as ‘Phil from the Wizards crew.’

Though not his first choice, the name stuck. Kim claimed the gold medal at the WDSF World Breaking Championships 2022 in Seoul, South Korea, triumphing over more than 250 competitors.

In 2023, he won gold at the WDSF Pan American Breaking Championship in Santiago, Chile, followed by a silver at the WDSF World Breaking Championship 2023.

In August 2023, Kim was selected for Canada’s Pan American Games team 2023.

He went on to win gold in the inaugural Olympic Breakdancing competition in 2024, joining Japanese b-girl Ami as one of the first, and so far the only, Olympic gold medalists in breaking.
