Russian sports officials confirmed the tragic death of Buvaisar Saitiev passing on Sunday, leaving the entire wrestling world and Russian sports community in shock. Following the news about his tragic death, Mikhail Mamiashvili, who is the President of the Russian Wrestling Federation, expressed:

Meanwhile, Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev also described the sudden loss as “premature and tragic.”

Buvaisar Saitiev bio

Buvaisar Saitiev was a legendary Russian Muslim wrestler who was born in Khasavyurt, Dagestan, on March 1, 1975. He recently passed away on March 2, 2025. Buvaisar showed promise in wrestling at a very early age and moved to Siberia back in 1992 to train at a prestigious wrestling center. During his time there, he stood out for his exceptional talent and dedication. He notably competed in the 74-kilogram weight category throughout his career.

He came from a large family with five other siblings: Adam Saitiev, Sultan Saitiev, Dzhenet Saitieva, Malika Saitieva, and Abdul-Khakim Saitiev. Buvaisar’s younger brother, Adam Saitiev, also became an Olympic champion after winning a gold at the 2000 Sydney Games.

While his relationship status isn’t known, he was believed to be single and unmarried.

Cause of death

As of now, Russian sports officials confirmed Buvaisar Saitiev’s death but did not reveal the exact cause of his death.

According to a report by RTVI, Saitiev was hospitalized in Moscow with suspected poisoning and had been dealing with lung issues while some claimed he had passed away from a cardiac arrest and intoxication in Moscow but nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.

Career and achievements

Buvaisar Saitiev is notably regarded as one of the most decorated wrestlers and competed in the 74-kilogram category. Saitiev won Olympic gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Games, the 2004 Athens Games, as well as the 2008 Beijing Games. Besides dominating at the Olympics, he also went on to secure six World Championship titles and six European Championship titles.

Buvaisar also secured the Honored Master of Sports of Russia title in 1995. Over the years, he also won various prestigious national honors like the Order of Merit for the Fatherland (IV degree), the Order of Honor, and the Order of Friendship. Aside from his athletic career, Saitiev pursued various intellectual interests as well, and he was deeply influenced by Russian literature. Following his retirement from wrestling, Bivaisar also ventured into politics, serving as a member of the Russian State Duma.

In thirteen years, he competed in eleven World or Olympic championship tournaments, winning nine gold medals at those events and losing only two bouts as he won at the World championships in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2005, and at the Olympics in 1996, 2004 and 2008 in the 74kg category.

In the 2004 Olympics, he outscored his competition by a total of 32-5 and blanked his final two opponents.
