Who was MLA Raju Pal?
MLA Raju Pal was a renowned Indian politician from Uttar Pradesh who was murdered in 2005. He has been in the news because Umesh Pal, a crucial witness in his murder case, was also murdered recently.
He was a native of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He was married, and his wife’s name is Puja Pal.
He was the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
He was murdered on January 25, 2005. Gadariya or Gadaria (also known as, Pal, Nikhar, Baghela,Gadri, Gayri , Bharwad, Dhangar, Bharwad, veer_gadariya etc.) are a community of traditionally non-elite Shepherd in India and they were traditionally involved professionally in livestock breeding, especially sheep. Raju was a Hindu by religion.
Why was he murdered?
MLA Raju Pal initially lost the 2002 election to Atique Ahmed. Ahmad did, however, quit the seat in 2004 after being elected to the Lok Sabha. Surprisingly, Raju Pal won the next by-election in November 2004 over Atique’s younger brother Mohammad Ashraf.
Due to this, the electoral conflict developed into a political rivalry. On January 25, 2005, a day before Republic Day, the BSP MLA was returning home from Swarooprani Nehru Hospital when a car overtook it. Raju was shot dead by the assailants who opened fire heavily on his car in the Sulem Sarai neighborhood of the city.
Together with MLA Raju Pal, two other people were murdered in the event, and the postmortem report noted that Raju had received about 18 gunshot wounds.
Ten people, including Atiq Ahmad and his younger brother, were charged in a CBI investigation into the incident. Atiq is now detained at the Ahmedabad jail, while Ashraf, who is also charged in the case, is detained in the Bareilly jail.
Puja Pal, Raju Pal’s wife, ran for the Allahabad West seat but lost to Ashraf. She received a ticket from the BSP once more for the 2007 Assembly elections, which she won. She then won again in 2012. Later, the BJP’s Siddharth Nath Singh defeated Puja in the 2017 Assembly elections. Later, she won the Chail seat in the elections 2022.
