Cheyenne Tennis Association President resigns in protest
Jackie Fulkrod, the president of the Cheyenne Tennis Association has resigned in protest of Brooklyn’s participation. Fulkrod expressed how she felt that it was unfair for a man to play against other women. Fulkrod made the decision because she feels it is against her personal values and also with the motive to protect the interest of female athletes under the association. Notably, Fulkrod’s mother also stepped down from the association’s board due to the same reasons.
Ross responds to the controversy
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Ross also decided to express her view on the statement saying:
It’s always been positive and good. I feel sad this woman has resigned over this.”
Ross also expressed how she feels that her participation can help educate people about transgender individuals in sports. She further added how kids will get the chance to see a trans woman competing and see a real example.
“Tennis thrives when the sport embraces inclusion”
Interestingly, the organizers of the tournament had a different view to Fulkrod’s. When speaking about the controversy surrounding Ross, Peg Connor, who is the tournament director and executive director of the Wyoming Tennis Association simple referred to the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) transgender policy. Peg stated the USTA’s statement on transgender athletes:
Tennis thrives when the sport embraces inclusion. For that reason, tennis is open to all regardless of one’s age, ethnicity, race, religious background, sexual orientation or gender identity.”
