Earlier, reports emerged indicating that a student from the University of North Carolina, who was in Cape Town, doing an internship with a non-government organization, was found dead in the Table Mountains of South Africa.
The 20-year-old student identified as Brook Cecilia Cheuvront, was reportedly went missing on Saturday, when the tracking app she was using during a solo hike stopped updating.
Her friends who were unable to get in touch with her, reported her missing. Later, her body was discovered the next day on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, a part of Table Mountain National Park.

The circumstances surrounding Cheuvront’s death remain under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine her cause of death. Avery County High School, where Cheuvront graduated in 2022, had counselors and pastors at the school Monday for students to talk to after her demise.
In a Facebook post, Cheuvront’s father said the family was devastated. “God help me and us,” Steve Cheuvront wrote after his daughter was found dead by another hiker at 1:00pm on 22 September.
What Exactly Happened?
As per the statement given by South African National Parks, Brook Cheuvront had left her accommodation around afternoon on Saturday to start her hike.
When her tracking app failed to update about her location, concern grew amongst her friends, who reportedly went to see local authorities and reported her missing.
Soon afterwards search oration was carried out by rangers and wilderness rescue teams, however, the operation had to be paused late on Saturday.
Later, the authorities resumed the search operation on Sunday morning with the help of a helicopter, which led to the discovery of her death.
What Did South African National Parks Say?
In a statement, the South African National Parks have confirmed that an investigation in the cause is underway and the body of Brook Cheuvront has sent for an autopsy to determined the exact cause of her death.

About Brook Cheuvront
Though at the time of writing this article, there isn’t much information available about Brook Cheuvront.
However, as per a few media reports, she had been a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was highly regarded in her community for her academic excellence.
Additionally, she was a recipient of the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship, which allowed her opportunities to study abroad.
After her tragic death, Brook Cheuvront’s father, Steve Cheuvront, expressed grief in an emotional Facebook post, writing, “God help me and us.”
