During an easyJet flight to the Spanish island of Menorca in July 2022, a message was found on Gatwick’s Wi-Fi network by UK security services. While the jet was in the air, they notified the Spanish authorities of the occurrence.
According to testimony given in court, two Spanish F-18 fighter planes were called into action and followed the aircraft until it touched down. After landing, the aircraft was extensively inspected, and Verma was taken into custody. Before being freed on bond, the 18-year-old was detained in a police cell for two days.
During the Madrid trial, Aditya Verma maintained that his message was a joke, conveyed in private to friends, with no intention of hurting or upsetting anyone. On his phone, the authorities discovered material about conflicts between India and Pakistan as well as the possibility of an ISIS attack. However, there is no proof that Verma is associated with radical Islamists.
Although he is not facing terrorism charges, Verma could be fined 22,500 euros (Rs 20.35 lakh) if found guilty. However, the Spanish Defense Ministry is requesting 95,000 euros (about Rs 85.94 lakh) in costs. A decision is expected in the next several days.

In spite of the gravity of the situation, Spanish officials have made it clear that they do not intend to send the Aditya Verma to prison.
