Who is Brice Oligui Nguema?

Brice Oligui Nguema is a Gabonese military leader. He has been in the news because he orchestrated the coup against Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba after his third election victory.

He was born in 1974 or 1975 in Ngouoni, Haut-Ogooué Province, Gabon. His mother was Teke, and his father was Fang Oligui.

After completing his schooling, Brice Oligui Nguema attended Omar Bongo University. Later, Oligui joined the Meknes Royal Military Academy in Morocco.

Nguema is currently 48–49 years old and is a Christian by religion. Nothing is known about his wife or marital details.

Nguema was seen as entrepreneurial and also believed to be a millionaire in Gabonese circles and the Bongo family has ruled oil-rich Gabon for over half a century.

His career

Brice Oligui Nguema served as an aide-de-camp to President Omar Bongo. Oligui assumed diplomatic positions in the Gabonese embassies in Senegal and Morocco after Bongo’s death in 2009. In October 2018, Oligui returned to Gabon, replacing Colonel Frédéric Bongo as the head of the Directorate General of Special Services (DGSS), the intelligence service of the Republican Guard.

In April 2019, he received a promotion to Brigadier General for revitalizing Operation Mamba in 2021. Becoming commander of the Gabonese Republican Guard in April 2020, Oligui considerably increased the Special Interventions Section (SIS) during this time.

Together with his military and diplomatic responsibilities, Brice Oligui Nguema is regarded as an entrepreneur and a wealthy person in Gabonese society. Investigations conducted in 2020 showed his ownership of US properties worth more than $1 million and his contribution to the Bongos’ global commercial expansion.

With the help of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, Nguema was appointed interim president of Gabon following the coup d’état in 2023.
