Schottenheimer’s coaching career began in 1997 with the St. Louis Rams, where he held various assistant roles. He later worked with teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Syracuse Orange, USC Trojans, Washington Redskins, and San Diego Chargers. His significant breakthrough came in 2006 when he was appointed as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, where he remained until 2011.
In 2012, Schottenheimer became the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams before moving to the University of Georgia as offensive coordinator in 2015. He then worked with the Indianapolis Colts (2016-2017) as a quarterbacks coach, followed by a role as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks till 2020. Under his leadership, the Seahawks posted a strong 2018 season with the league’s top rushing offense, although Schottenheimer was dismissed in 2021 due to philosophical differences.
Schottenheimer briefly served as passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 before being hired as a consultant by the Dallas Cowboys in 2022. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 and, after a successful stint, took over as the Cowboys’ head coach in 2025. Schottenheimer is the son of legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer and the nephew of Kurt Schottenheimer, both prominent figures in football. Beyond coaching, he contributes to The 33rd Team, a football think tank.
Born on October 16, 1973, in Denver, Colorado, Schottenheimer who has a height of 6 feet 2 inches was raised in a football family and his father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a legendary NFL coach, which greatly influenced Brian’s passion for the game.
Marty passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021 in Charlotte, NC and had been battling Alzheimer’s for several years and was moved to hospice and is survived by his wife, Pat,; his children Kristen and Brian and his daughter-in-law, Gemmi; and grandchildren Brandon, Sutton, Savannah and Catherine.
Throughout the hectic life of coaching, Brian has had Gemmi Schottenheimer as his partner. On June 29, 2002, the pair tied the knot. They have already been together for over 20 years. While Gemmi’s DOB isn’t known, she is aged between 45-55 years while her husband Brian is aged 51.
After playing quarterback at Blue Valley High School, Brian’s path into coaching was set and before joining the Cowboys, Schottenheimer worked with several NFL teams, including the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Schottenheimer’s net worth is estimated at $10 million and although his salary for 2025 has not been disclosed, offensive coordinators in the NFL typically earn between $1 million and $3 million annually.
His coaching record includes 172 wins and 180 losses, with a postseason record of 5-7. Schottenheimer’s contract will be for four years and while his salary at Dallas Cowboys isn’t known, McCarthy made $8 million per year but Brian won’t demand such a figure in all likelihood.
