A trans-identified male Brian Nguyen was considered one of the first transgender titleholders within the Miss America Organization. This took place after he has been crowned as Miss Greater Derry of 2023 in a beauty pageant Sunday held in New Hampshire.

The Miss Greater Derry Scholarship event was launched in 1986 to “provide scholarships to young women between the age group of 17 and 24. These scholarships are for women living in the Greater Derry area recognizing their achievements in scholastic aptitude, talent, character, community service and poise.
“In the 100-year history of the Miss America, I have officially become one of the FIRST transgender titleholders within the Miss America Organization,” stated Brian on Instagram.
“No words will be describing the feeling of having the great chance to serve my community and also represent my community for the first time at the Miss New Hampshire. I am so honored to be crowned your new Miss Greater Derry of 2023, and I am thrilled to show you all what I have up my sleeves. This will be an amazing year.”
The response on social media was mixed. On Facebook, Brian Nguyen was described as “iconic and history maker” of all time while few have taken to Twitter to point out that the biological male had taken away the chances of scholarship from a young woman.
Others pointed out the obvious double standard that if an obese woman tried to enter a beauty pageant, she cannot even make it past the first stage.
From the photographs uploaded on the social media handle, it would appear that the assessment of physical fitness in the swimsuit competition is going on still. The physical fitness term seems to be redefined now.
A court recently ruled, ‘The Miss United States of the America pageant cannot be forced to include transgender participants after a trans-identified male claimed being excluded was discrimination.’
