In September 2021, the dead body of Gabby Petito was found at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, ending her heartbreaking adventure as a YouTuber who chronicled life on the road with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Only one of them returned from the trip though as Brian ended up murdering Gabby.

Joe Petitwittero, Gabby’s father, shared with PEOPLE in June 2024 that he doesn’t believe in closure after the loss of a child. “You’re never going to get closure over the loss of a child,” Joe said.
“There will always be a hole in your heart that’s never going away.” Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, shared her feelings months later, telling PEOPLE, “We’re never going to feel like we have justice.” Nichole added, “It’s been three years now since the last time I heard her voice or seen her, and that’s really hard.”
Since Gabby Petito’s terrible murder, her parents have been seeking for justice. They sued the Moab police for failing to safeguard Gabby during a traffic stop in August 2021, among other things.
According to body camera evidence, Gabby Petito was clearly angry but police officers allegedly disregarded indications of domestic abuse. According to their $50 million wrongful death lawsuit filed in November 2022, Gabby might still be alive if the cops had taken a different course of action. Even though the case was dropped in November 2024, her parents are still optimistic about what can happen next.
Nichole and Joe also filed a lawsuit against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, Brian Laundrie’s parents, alleging they were aware of Gabby’s passing and where her body was.
The families came to an agreement in February 2024, and according to Gabby’s family lawyer, the settlement would allow them to “move on and continue to honor the legacy of our beautiful daughter, Gabby.”
Gabby’s parents and stepparents have managed to help one another through their suffering. Joe revealed that he has become closer to his wife Tara, Nichole, and her husband Jim.
Gabby’s family is dedicated to preserving her memory despite the continuous sadness. They seek to raise awareness and inspire change via their efforts, which include the release of the Netflix documentary American Murder: Gabby Petito.
The murder of aspiring van life vlogger, Gabby Petito, and subsequent suicide of her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, who left a note confessing that he’d killed her, is being re-examined in Netflix’s new docuseries, American Murder: Gabby Petito. The show also questions how much Brian’s family knew about the murder, as he returned back to his parents’ home after killing Gabby but Brian’s mum and dad, Christopher and Roberta, repeatedly refused to cooperate with the authorities and of being aware of Gabby’s murder while the authorities searched for her throughout September 2021.
Brian Laundrie
Brian who was born on November 18, 1997 in Florida, USA, committed suicide after murdering his girlfriend with him dying aged 23 on October 20, 2021. He was a craftsman and lived a survivalist lifestyle and posted various designs and drawings on his Instagram where he had over 270,000 followers.
He was born to parents Christopher Laundrie and Roberta Richards and had a sister named Cassie. His family lives in North Port, Florida and he proposed to Petito in 2020.
Brian began dating Petito in 2019 after they first met in high school, and the two became engaged in 2020. The problems that the couple began to encounter were brought to light in American Murder, particularly after they relocated to Florida to live with his family.
Before embarking on their cross-country journey in 2021, Brian and Petito gathered up some cash, which they chronicled. Police in Moab, Utah, stopped Brian and Petito in August 2021 after receiving a 911 call about a guy hitting a lady. Following her abduction, body camera footage surfaced, in which Petito confessed to hitting Brian and he confessed to pushing her. He confessed to being responsible for Petito’s death in a notepad found in his backpack, which the FBI verified.
Gabby likely died on 27 August 2021 and Brian returned to his parents’ home in Florida a few days later, driving back in their shared van. Along with his parents, Roberta and Christopher, Brian then went back and forth between their family home and local camping spots, before going missing himself and his body was recovered on 20 October from a local wooded area in Florida.
Cassie Laundrie is the older sister of Brian Laundrie, who committed suicide after killing his girlfriend, Gabby Petito. After Gabby’s disappearance, Brian spent time with his family, including his sister Cassie who has claimed she never hid any information from the police.
Roberta Laundrie

In the American Murder special on Netflix, there were quotes from Brian’s letters to his mother in which she proised to assist him in “disposing of a body” if necessary. When Petito’s parents filed a civil case against Roberta and Christopher for allegedly omitting to reveal that Brian admitted to killing his fiancée, it raised questions about how much information Brian’s parents had regarding his death.
The Laundries’ attorneys debated the letter’s admissibility, arguing that it was composed before to Petito’s passing. In November 2022, the families reached a confidential settlement in the matter. At CrimeCon in May 2024, Nicole Schmidt, Petito’s mother, stated that she forgives Brian for her daughter’s passing but not Roberta.

Christopher Laundrie
When Christopher first came home from his trip in 2021 with the van, but not with Petito, footage from American Murder showed him refusing to talk to the police about Brian’s whereabouts.
Before the civil action trial, which was eventually settled, Christopher and Roberta discussed Petito’s murder for the first time under oath. In August 2021, Christopher said, his son called and urgently screamed, “Gabby’s gone.” In his deposition, Brian’s father claimed he “had no idea” what Brian meant by the remark.
