Eric Roy bio

Eric Serge Armand Roy is an ex-French professional football manager who was born on September 26, 1967, in Nice, France. He is the current manager of Ligue 1 side Brest and a former player who mainly played as a midfielder for several clubs. Notably, Eric’s father, Serge Roy, was also a professional footballer.

After guiding Stade Brestois to a promising 14th position, manager Eric Roy extended his contract by two years to stay at Brest till 2025.

Playing career

Roy who was a midfielder started out his professional football career with OGC Nice before eventually joining Toulon, Lyon, and then Marseille. He also briefly played for Sunderland, where he scored once during a 5-0 win over Walsall in the League Cup. Eric Roy later returned to France to play for Troyes before joining Spanish side Rayo Vallecano and eventually ending his career at Nice.

Managerial career

After his retirement in September 2005, Eric Roy started his new role as director of marketing, communication, and public relations at OGC Nice. By September of 2008, he had become the director of development and public relations. The following year, he was promoted as sporting director, and by March 2010, he was appointed manager of Nice.

Besides that, he also served as a professional trainer and sports director. Roy eventually stepped down from the position in November 2011 by mutual agreement but retained his duties as the sports director. The following year, the club officially dismissed him on June 11, 2012, for serious misconduct. However, after a long legal battle, Roy eventually won the case, and Nice ended up paying Roy nearly €300,000 for a wrongful dismissal.

Roy then took up a new role as sporting director of RC Lens in September 2017, before leaving the same in April 2019. He went on to join Watford in December 2019 as sporting director. Eric Roy eventually joined his current role as manager of Ligue 1 side Brest on January 3, 2023. During the 2023/24 season, Eric helped the club secure their first ever participation in European competitions. The club finished third in the league and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

Back in 2012, Eric Roy became a consultant for popular sports channel beIN Sports. There, he worked as a consultant in the Le Club program from Monday to Thursday at 7 p.m. He also worked on the Friday pre-match and the post-match of the Ligue 1 games alongside Florian Genton.

He eventually left the role in 2017 and then became a consultant for France Télévisions from 2019. While there, Eric worked as a commentator on the Coupe de France matches and the Coupe de la Ligue. He worked alongside Kader Boudaoud until December 2019, before working alongside Fabien Lévêque.
