Brent Sikkema, who founded the Manhattan gallery now known as Sikkema Jenkins & Co, was found dead in Rio de Janeiro on Monday (15 January) and is survived by his husband Daniel and adopted son Lucas. His net worth isn’t known though.
Brent was born and raised by his parents in Morrison, Illinois, and came from a Caucasian background and despite his sudden demise at age 75, the art gallery owner leaves behind a great legacy.
Brent worked as director of exhibitions at the Visual Studies Workshop after graduating college and from 1976 to 1980, he was the director of Boston’s Vision Gallery.
Soon after, he moved to New York and founded Wooster Grdes and named Michael Jenkins as its director.

Forensic Investigation Underway
A forensic investigation by the police is underway, with efforts being made to locate witnesses for additional information. Sikkema Jenkins & Co., an art gallery situated in Manhattan, paid homage to Brent Sikkema on Instagram.
The gallery revealed that Sikkema had served as the Director of Exhibitions at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. Additionally, he was recognized as the proprietor and director of Vision Gallery in Boston.
The Instagram tribute highlighted Sikkema’s artistic journey, starting with the establishment of a contemporary art gallery named Wooster Gardens in Soho in 1991. The gallery later moved to the Chelsea arts district in 1999, eventually adopting the name Sikkema Jenkins & Co.
Suspect’s Identity Remains Elusive?
Following his tragic demise, Sikkema’s body was reportedly transported to Rio’s Legal Medical Institute, awaiting further updates from local authorities. The circumstances surrounding Sikkema’s death have raised numerous questions, prompting an ongoing investigation.
Surveillance footage from Sikkema’s apartment reportedly captured an unidentified individual, observed arriving in a car during the early morning hours, lingering for a duration, and then leaving after 14 minutes.
The suspect’s identity remains elusive, and no arrests have been made. While the police have not found any weapons near the victim, the investigation continues with the scrutiny of approximately 13 nearby cameras.
What Did CCTV Footage Revealed?
One of the cameras revealed a person present in the area for around 14 hours on the day of the alleged murder. Simone Nunes reportedly lost contact with Brent Sikkema after January 12, 2024, and he was expected to travel to the US four days later.
According to Artforum, Brent Sikkema, an alumnus of the San Francisco Art Institute, held various positions at the Visual Studies Workshop and Vision Gallery.
He initiated the Wooster Gardens gallery, later transforming it into Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in partnership with Michael Jenkins in 1996.
The report additionally mentions Sikkema’s residence in a townhouse at Jardim Botanico, where he occasionally stayed each year.
