Gabriel da Silva Santos is a Brazilian swimmer who was born on May 4, 1996, in Guarulhos, State of Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil. He notably competed in the menโ€™s 4×100 metre freestyle relay event at the 2016 Summer Olympics, finishing at 5th place.

Career and achievements

Santos made his debut at a major international competition during the Rio 2016 Olympics, competing in the 400-meter freestyle relay. He competed alongside Marcelo Chierighini, Nicolas Oliveira, and Jaoa de Lucca. They finished in the place fifth during the final round. Meanwhile, he competed again at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, where he won a silver.

Following the win, Brazil beat the South American record of 2009, with a time of 3:10.34. Brazil had last won a medal in this race, back in 1994. In the individual event, Gabriel Santos finished 14th in the Menโ€™s 100 metre freestyle. The following year, he competed at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

During that event, he won a gold in the Menโ€™s 4×100 metre freestyle relay besides finishing 12th in the Menโ€™s 100-metre freestyle as well as 12th in the Menโ€™s 50-metre freestyle. Notably, Santos got embroiled in an anti-doping rule violation on May 20, 2019. As a result, the FINA attempted to impose a 12-month suspension on him, followed up by an investigation from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The court overturned the FINA suspension and ruled in Santosโ€™ favour.

Following the news about the anti-doping rule violation, Santos got indefinitely banned from competing in the International Swimming League. Gabriel Santos then qualified to represent Brazil at the 2020 Summer Olympics in June 2021 where he featured in the 4×100 relay.

He then competed in the 2022 South American Games, where he won gold medals across three events – 50 m butterfly, 4×100 m freestyle, 4×100 mixed free. He also won a bronze medal in the 100 m freestyle. Most recently, he featured in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
