BR Gavai to step in as New Chief Justice of India

According to official reports, Justice Gavai is scheduled to take the oath as the new Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. The oath-taking ceremony is set to take place on the day after the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna. His appointment comes following the traditional process involving the outgoing CJI recommending his name to the Union Law Ministry.

Justice Gavai will reportedly serve in the new role for around six months until his retirement on 23 November, 2025. Gavai’s recent appointment marks a historic milestone, as he becomes only the second Dalit CJI in India’s history.

BR Gavai Bio

Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is a renowned Indian judiciary figure who was born on November 24, 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. Gavai comes from a family rooted in public service and social justice as his father, Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai, was a prominent politician besides being a social activist. Ramkrishna notably served as the Governor of Bihar and Kerala as well. Meanwhile, his mother, Kamala Gavai, was a homemaker.

Justice Gavai has two siblings: a brother, named Rajendra Gavai, who works as a politician and medical doctor, and a sister named Kirti.

Justice BR Gavai is currently 64 years old and stands approximately at around 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm) tall.

Education

Justice Gavai pursued his higher education at Nagpur University. It was here that he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree followed by a Bachelor of Legislative Law (LL.B.).

Profession and Career

Justice Gavai started out his career in law after enrolling as an advocate on 16 March 1985. After his initial training under Barrister Bhonsale, he started out his independent practice in the Bombay High Court in 1987. He later practiced at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, where he specialised in constitutional and administrative law. During his time there, Gavai represented major institutions including SICOM, DCVL, and various municipal councils.

Throughout his career, Justice Gavai has served in various roles, including Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor (1992-1993) and Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench (2000). He was appointed as the Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003, before becoming a permanent judge in 2005.

Justice Gavai obtained a role in the the Supreme Court of India in 2019, and has since presided over several major cases. He has also served as Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur. Most recently Justice Gavai was appointed as Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in 2024.

Wife and Children

Justice Gavai is married to his wife Tejaswini Gavai, with whom he has has a daughter named Karishma Gavai.
