Robert Helenius boxing career
Robert Helenius has had quite the boxing career winning the silver at the 2006 European Championships as an amateur. He made his professional boxing debut back in May 2008, where he beat Gene Pukall in the first round with just three punches. Following that impressive win, he went on a 22-fight winning streak spanning almost eight years. During that time, he secured notable TKO wins against Wladimir Klitschko’s, Lamon Brewster, former world champions Samuel Peter and Siarhei Liakhovich and more.
Following a controversial win against Chisora, Helenius underwent shoulder surgery leaving him 13 months out. While he did win against Sherman Williams and Michael Sprott after coming back, it led to further injury woes. He secured another TKO win over Andras Csomor back in March 2015, and then beat Franz Rill. He become a two-time European champion in the process but vacated the fight after passing on a rematch with Chisora.
Helenius faced Johann Duhaupas in April 2016 and suffered his first loss after getting kocked out in round six. He then suffered a second defeat following a 12 round match against Whyte in October 2017. His third defeat came at the hands of Chisora in July 2019 after losing in a knockout in round eight. Following which he came back hard with a three-fight winning streak, including back-to-back wins over Adam Kownacki. Those wins helped Helenius secure a fight with Wilder where he looked to be doing enough to win but eventually lost out during the closing second of round one. The loss to Wilder came as a sign of a conclusive ending to a top-level career.
Robert Helenius vs Anthony Joshua
However, despite his deteriorating form, Robert was still in fighting shape and managed to coming through against Mielonen unhurt. As such, he landed a very unlikely shot at fighting Anthony Joshua.
Some of the other reasons include the fact that Helenius has strong fundamentals and a solid career resume. Moreover, he has a sensible purse demand comparatively and could offer several credible rounds where AJ will get to showcase his new skills under new trainer Derrick James. The upcoming match will surely be an exciting bout for both fighters.
