Narender Berwal, who just a few days ago earned a spot in the +92 kg category semifinal, wins the bronze medal in men’s boxing at the Asian Games 2023 after losing 0-5 to defending Olympic medallist Kamshybek Kunkabayev.

Early on, Narender struck out a couple times before retreating. With a score of 5-0, the Kazakh fighter made his presence felt. The next six minutes saw Kunkabayev become more frantic and throw punches at will while Narender appeared to be completely lost. The Indian was obviously aiming to go for a knockout while trailing on all scorecards, but that punch never arrived.

His performance grabbed PM Modi’s attention and the Indian prime minister took over his official X account, (formerly known as Twitter) and congratulated him. He wrote:

Earlier this year, at the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships, Narender Berwal won a competitive fight to proceed to the quarterfinals. Narender (+92kg), who had previously been in the World Championship quarterfinals, started his quest for a medal by defeating Muhammad Abroridinov of Tajikistan 4-1.

Meanwhile, Tuesday at the Asian Games, world champion Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) qualified for the Olympics by reaching the final, and Preeti Pawar (54 kg) took third place alongside Narender Berwal (+92 kg).

The Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Borgohain managed her match against Thailand’s Baison Manikon, the silver medalist at the Asian Championships, deftly to win by a score of 5-0 and keep her hopes of winning the gold medal in the continental championship alive.

Lyu Ping injured his forehead during their head-on collision, which caused Sachin Siwach to lose his 57 kg quarterfinal match 1-4 in three minutes and seven seconds.
