The Third Combat Athlete to Die in the war
According to Karim Zidan of Bloody Elbow, with Galinichev’s passing, the number of combat athletes killed in the continuing battle against the Russian invasion of Ukraine now stands at three.
Maksym Kagal died in Mariupol in March 2022, which was the first time this had happened. Kagal, a top kickboxer, belonged to the neo-Nazi Azov battalion, an organisation that advocates for extreme nationalism and has regularly been at the forefront of problems in southern Ukraine. Boxer Oleg Prudky also lost his life in combat in May of that same year.
Prudky, a two-time amateur champion who served in the special forces of the Cherkasy Police, was one of four members who died in an attack.
