Gotti is not lightweight. The Oyster Bay brawler, who is the son of John “Junior” Gotti, is 2-0 in professional boxing and 5-1 in mixed martial arts. Given that the fight was marketed as “Last Names Matter,” Gotti III, as per the New York Post claimed he was “honoured to share the ring” with Mayweather and described the event as a “pinch me moment.” At a press conference for the fight held last month at the Miami’s Gabriel Miami Downtown Hotel, Gotti revealed to the media that he had grown up idolising Mayweather.
That Gotti is 6 feet tall and Mayweather is 5 feet 8 inches tall was evident during their presser staredown. The money each fighter received for the fight was kept a secret. The 46-year-old Mayweather declared his retirement from legally sanctioned competition after defeating MMA legend Conor McGregor in 2017. He has continued boxing nonetheless, taking part in exhibition fights against opponents like Aaron Chalmers and Logan Paul.

Who was John Gotti?
John Gotti, who was born in the Bronx in 1940, started his criminal career when he was just 12 years old. In his teen years, Gotti participated in truck hijackings at what is now known as JFK airport and went on to become a close friend of the Anastasia family.
Gotti subsequently gained a reputation as an enforcer and joined the organisation that is now known as the Gambino Crime Family. Until 1983, when his brother Gene and closest buddy Angelo Ruggiero were detained for heroin trafficking, Gotti rose through the ranks of the mafia to the position of capo. Ruggiero was the end result of devastating wiretaps against Paul Castellano, the boss of the Gambino crime family, and the other commission bosses.
To survive and “take his family back” from the “greedy” Castellano by 1985, Gotti had no alternative but to murder Castellano. By January 1986, John Gotti had been named the head of the Gambino Crime Family, and he remained in that position until his capture in December 1990.
Gotti’s three prior acquittals were largely the result of jury tampering by Sammy Gravano. Wiretaps captured Gotti complaining about his chief enforcer and underboss, Gravano, and confessing to having given the go-ahead for the deaths of other Gambino crime family members.
Gravano subsequently turned against Gotti and gave false testimony, leading to the “Dapper Don”‘s life sentence. Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer while incarcerated, and it was this illness that ultimately claimed his life on June 10, 2002, at the age of 61. He had a net worth of $30 million.
