Jai Opetaia defeated David Nyika in a thrilling fourth-round knockout on Wednesday in Gold Coast, Australia, to maintain his IBF cruiserweight title.
From the very first bell, Nyika and Jai Opetaia, ESPN’s top cruiserweight, fought fiercely, exchanging power punches continually. Nyika, a 29-year-old New Zealand Olympic bronze medallist, was competing at the world level for the first time after filling in for an injured competitor. Early on, Nyika tried to win Opetaia’s respect by pushing him away and using power combinations.
In the end, the significant increase in competitiveness proved to be too much, as the Australian began timing Nyika with his renowned right hook.
