Who is Michelle Wu?

Michelle Wu is a Taiwanese-origin American politician. She has been in the news because the exclusion of white council members from her holiday party sparks controversy.

She was born on 14 January 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Her parents were Taiwanese immigrants, and her father’s name is Han Wu. She also has three siblings in her family.

After completing her schooling at Barrington High School, Michelle Wu graduated from Barrington High School in 2003. Afterward, she relocated to the Boston region to pursue her education at Harvard University, where she earned her economics degree in 2007. Later, she earned her graduation degree and J.D. from Harvard Law School. She also completed Emerge Massachusetts, a program designed to prepare women for positions of leadership in politics.

She is married, and her husband’s name is Conor Pewarski. The couple has two sons.

Wu’s annual salary increased from $207,000 a year to $250,000 annually in 2022 as she proposed raises for herself and the council in August. Under Wu’s proposal, councilors’ salaries would increase to $115,000 and her salary would be raised to $230,000.

Michelle Wu broke barriers as the first Asian American woman on the Boston City Council from 2014 to 2021 and served as its president from 2016 to 2018. She became the first non-white female mayor of Boston, continuing her historic journey.
