The dinner, which was hosted at city hall, received backlash for its contentious invites from social media users and council members. After being extended to all 13 council members at first, invitations were later withheld for white members, raising accusations of prejudice.
The original invitation to the event was sent to “Electeds of Color” by Mayor Michelle Wu’s City Council relations director, Denise DosSantos. After the invites to white members were quickly withdrawn, an apology was sent out, claiming that an email error had occurred by mistake.
Mayor Wu also acknowledged the mistake, expressing her commitment to inclusive values, while Dos Santos apologized for any offense caused by the misunderstanding in subsequent communication.

Who is Michelle Wu?
Michelle Wu is a Taiwanese-origin American politician. She has been in the news because the exclusion of white council members from her holiday party sparks controversy.
She was born on 14 January 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Her parents were Taiwanese immigrants, and her father’s name is Han Wu. She also has three siblings in her family.
After completing her schooling at Barrington High School, Michelle Wu graduated from Barrington High School in 2003. Afterward, she relocated to the Boston region to pursue her education at Harvard University, where she earned her economics degree in 2007. Later, she earned her graduation degree and J.D. from Harvard Law School. She also completed Emerge Massachusetts, a program designed to prepare women for positions of leadership in politics.
She is married, and her husband’s name is Conor Pewarski. The couple has two sons.
Michelle Wu is currently 38 years old.
Wu’s annual salary increased from $207,000 a year to $250,000 annually in 2022 as she proposed raises for herself and the council in August. Under Wu’s proposal, councilors’ salaries would increase to $115,000 and her salary would be raised to $230,000.
Her career
Michelle Wu broke barriers as the first Asian American woman on the Boston City Council from 2014 to 2021 and served as its president from 2016 to 2018. She became the first non-white female mayor of Boston, continuing her historic journey.
She was a member of the Democratic Party and developed significant laws in the City Council that addressed everything from environmental preservation to parental leave to healthcare equality for transgender people.
Among the notable things she has done as mayor include implementing a “Green New Deal” for Boston, removing the city’s fossil fuel investments, and setting aside $2 billion for school buildings.
