On Saturday, June 24, news arose that 64-year-old Joseph Strickland was the focus of an investigation known as an apostolic visitation, in which the Vatican looks into a parish in the United States for potential Bishop discipline. The Pillar verified on Sunday that the inspection was carried out last week by Bishops Gerald Kicanas (formerly of Tucson) and Dennis Sullivan (of Camden, New Jersey), who were joined by two priests.

Although the specifics of the visitation are unknown, numerous reports citing insiders from the diocese claimed that it was connected to Bishop Strickland’s increasingly divisive social media remarks on matters of LGBTQ rights, marriage, abortion, and most recently, his criticism of a just-released Vatican document.

Greater inclusion for LGBT persons was apparently listed in the Vatican paper as one of the subjects for debate during an assembly in October, among other things. On June 21, Strickland criticised the aforementioned paper in a tweet, writing: “It is a travesty that these things are even proposed for discussion. I pray that all who truly know Jesus Christ will not be deceived by this path. The Gospel welcomes all to repentance & sanctity, if there is no repentance the barriers to sanctity remain.”

Texas resident Bishop Strickland protested the Dodgers for honouring a drag group.

According to a diocese source who spoke with EWTN News on Saturday, Bishop Strickland was questioned about his social media posts that were allegedly against ecclesiastical protocol during the apostolic visitation. Bishop Strickland has previously defended the conservative position on issues like marriage and abortion.

After the bishop planned a prayer gathering in Los Angeles on June 16 to denounce the Dodgers for honouring a drag group at the team’s annual Pride Night game, the inquiry was launched. The bishop attacked Pope Francis last month in an impolite social media post, claiming that he opposed “his programme of undermining the Deposit of Faith.” The remark appears to have enraged Vatican authorities, who then launched an inquiry into the bishop’s contentious social media statements.

Bishop Strickland is charged with harbouring the former Mother Marie Ferréol, an expelled French nun, in addition to his opposing viewpoints. Pope Francis excommunicated the nun in 2021 as a result of her criticism of the institute’s leadership.
