The 72-year-old Irish businessman is currently one of the most recognizable faces at the Cheltenham Festival this week.
J.P. McManus history at Cheltenham Festival
J.P. McManus will be looking to add more winners to his endless list this year again at the Cheltenham Festival. The veteran racehorse owner recently purchased Corbetts Cross, who is the current favourite for Friday’s Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle race.
McManus won his first race at the Cheltenham Festival with Mister Donovan way back in 1982. He has had a four-decade involvement with the famous festival. One of his most memorable wins came from his horse Synchronised who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup back in 2012.
McManus has also twice won the Grand National Steeplechase, through Don’t Push It (ridden by AP McCoy) in 2010. He won it again 11 years later with Minella Times (ridden by Rachael Blackmore). Sadly, fans could not witness the second win as it was held behind closed doors due the Covid-19 restrictions.
J.P. McManus net worth and investments
J.P. McManus reportedly has a staggering net worth of around £2 billion. Besides racing, McManus also invested heavily in the Limerick GAA organization. Just last year, the sixth JP McManus Pro-Am golf tournament took place at the Adare Manor.
JP McManus is married to Noreen McManus, and has three children and four grandchildren.
The 72-year-old businessman famously once played a part in Manchester United’s golden years. Back in 2001, alongside his fellow business supremo John Magnier, the pair became the second-biggest shareholders in the club. Their stakes together were just a little under 9%.
However, the Glazer family bought out the pair in May of 2005. McManus and Magnier reportedly earned around £110 million following their sale to the controversial American family.
Last year, his son Tom made the headlines after gifting trainer Annabel Neasham a stunning Ferrari. The Australian-based McManus, had reportedly earned the car himself after his horse came home in the Inglish Millennium race. However, he opted to give it away due to technicalities.
“It just developed”
JP McManus achieved his 4,000th win as an owner last season. During an interview with the Irish Mirror McManus explained how he got into horseracing decades ago. He revealed:
“It was gambling that led me to horses and then when I had a few quid, I fancied owning a horse. It just developed. There was no great plan. It just fell into place.”
