According to a family relative, the 29-year-old Odisha man had committed to seeing his mother in Agra on March 10.
Bibhas Nayak attempted to swim back and save his fellow visitors after two of the three accused threw him into the canal. But when he was struck by a big stone that the accused had thrown into the water, he lost his ability to swim.
His brother-in-law, Akash Paul, who transported Bibhas’ body from Hampi to Kandhamal on Sunday, stated, “That is when, we suspect, he lost his life and drowned in the canal.” On Saturday, his body was discovered two kilometres from the scene.
After leaving his position at St. Stephen’s Hospital in New Delhi four months ago, Bibhas, who loves to travel, was riding his bike alone across the nation. Last week, he had arrived in Hampi.
“A local had told them that the site was a great place for stargazing. So after finishing their dinner, all of them along with the homestay owner went to the site. They were listening to music when the three accused, who were heavily inebriated, arrived at the spot and demanded Rs 100 for petrol,” said Akash.
Bibhas had Rs 20 in his bag, which he gave to the accused, but the others were cashless. The accused became enraged at the trivial sum, took up a fight, and began attacking them.
According to Akash, the accused began throwing stones and pushing the women into the canal when Bibhas and the other two tried to stop them from being r*ped. The two others were able to swim out, but they kept tossing stones into the water. Bibhas was struck by a stone, as evidenced by the significant wound on his head.
