Here is all you need to know about Bernardo Cueva, Chelsea’s new set piece coach

Brentford has formally announced Bernardo Cueva’s departure ahead of his upcoming transfer to Chelsea.

According to information obtained by The Athletic in March, Cueva is Chelsea’s first pick for the post that has been vacant since Anthony Barry left for Bayern Munich in April 2023.

Chelsea reportedly paid Brentford £750,000 to add Cueva to the team’s backroom staff, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Mexican had handled set pieces for Brentford among other things as the team’s tactical statistician.

Who is Bernardo Cueva? 

37 year old Bernardo Cueva is a Mexican football manager who was born in 1987. He is originally from the Providencia area and played street football as a child. 

A look at Bernardo Cueva’s career so far 

Bernardo Cueva was an analyst for the Mexican team Chivas from 2017 to 2020. During their run in the CONCACAF Champions League and their involvement in the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup, he was a member of Chivas.

In 2020, he became an analyst for the English second-tier team Brentford. When Brentford was promoted to the English Premier League, he was a part of the team. He created history by being the first Mexican coach to ever serve as a member of a Premier League side.

The Norwegian national football team appointed him as their set-piece coach in 2021. He was able to work for Brentford and the Norwegian national football team simultaneously because he was only hired by them during the international breaks. 

The 36-year-old Mexican has been instrumental in the growth of the team. He played tactical statistics for Chivas before joining Brentford, the reigning champions, in September 2020. 

Thomas Frank’s club rose to prominence for their effectiveness from set pieces after they were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in May 2021.

It is reported that he will begin the 2024–25 season as a set-piece coach with Chelsea F.C. Cueva became a member of the Brentford coaching staff in September 2020, and with this transfer, he will leave the team after almost four years.
