X recently took action against an account managed by an individual known as Barry Staton, following complaints from Indian users who highlighted the accountโ€™s racist content. However, a British media outlet speculated that the images on his account might have been taken from another individual.

Notably, the suspension came after Staton repeatedly posted offensive cartoons and comments portraying Indians in a negative light. News18 reported that this action was prompted by numerous reports from Indian users accusing the account of promoting racist rhetoric against India.

There was a profile picture on his X account but it was not his photo and he was impersonating a pensioner from Worcestershire.

Why X suspended Staton’s account?

India Today noted that Staton had previously supported a post advocating for the exclusion of Indian nationals from “white neighborhoods.” His posts were not limited to anti-Indian sentiments but also included hateful remarks targeting Jews and Africans. In one instance, he sarcastically mentioned his sonโ€™s experience of being “forced” to learn about korma in a religion class.

These activities did not escape the attention of Indian users, including Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom, who reported his account. One user, Akshit Singh, revealed on X that he had reached out to Ashwini Vaishnaw and the UK High Commission in India, urging them to suspend the account due to its promotion of hate speech based on race and nationality.

Statonโ€™s X profile claimed he was a British national with five children, and his verified account had amassed nearly two lakh followers. The offensive content he shared over the years had received thousands of likes and retweets. However, a 2017 report by The New Statesman suggested that the images on his account were stolen from a pensioner in Worcestershire.

The report concluded that “Barry Staton” might be a fictitious persona, either created by a liberal individual mocking racists or by a genuine racist concealing their true identity. Earlier this month, British YouTuber Miles Routledge faced widespread backlash for making racist remarks about India on X.
