Meghna Alam, the former Miss Bangladesh, has been detained in a Dhaka jail over the previous few days on charges of sour diplomatic relations with the nation.

The story of Meghna Alam has all the makings of a potboiler, a government acknowledgment that it handled the matter poorly, a ‘break in’ by officials into her home, which she livestreamed, allegations of extortion, and an alleged romance with a Saudi envoy.
Police claimed that Alam attempted to extort “$5 million through coercion” from Essa Yousef, who had just departed the country after serving as Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Bangladesh, according to reports in Bangladeshi media.
Meghna Alam, an actress, model, and environmentalist from Bangladesh, rose to fame after taking home the Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020 title. Alam is also the chairperson of the Miss Bangladesh Foundation, which promotes societal welfare, and a mindful leadership trainer. Alam also selects the Bangladeshi representatives for Miss Earth as the National Director of the Miss Bangladesh Organization.

Alam prior to her arrest put up several posts on Facebook claiming that a diplomat a married man had an affair with her and Alam’s father Badrul has backed up her claims who said she was in a relationship with the previous Saudi ambassador to Dhaka.
“The ambassador and Meghna were in a relationship, and my daughter refused his marriage proposal because he already has a wife and children,” he said.
Badrul said his daughter contacted the man’s wife and broke off the relationship but Alam is alleged to have tried to extort $5 million from Essa Yousef, the former Saudi ambassador to Bangladesh, according to local media sources.
“There are some allegations against her, but the arrest under the Special Powers Act was not carried out properly,” government advisor Asif Nazrul stated in an interview with the media on April 13, acknowledging that Alam’s detention was improper.

In a Facebook live stream prior to her arrest, 30-year-old Meghna Alam said that on the evening of April 9, the DB police, the Bangladesh police’s specialized Detective Branch broke into her Dhaka home and took her into custody.
Alam begged the authorities and promised to cooperate with the inquiry during the 12-minute footage. After a Dhaka court ordered 30-day detention, she was then arrested and transported to Kashimpur jail.
Alam had claimed in a since-deleted Facebook post that “the Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh, Essa Yousef, is taking up people by police, fearmongering that I should not post the truth on social media.”
