In the forthcoming five-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced on Monday that Azhar Mahmood, a former all-rounder, will lead the national team as head coach.
As batting coach, former star and selector Muhammad Yousuf will help the former pacer and right-handed batter, while Saeed Ajmal will serve as the spin bowling coach. Additionally, fielding coach for Pakistan, Aftab Khan, has rejoined the team.

The five-match Twenty20 International series will begin on April 18 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and end on April 27 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
Who is Azhar Mahmood?
Azhar Mahmood is a Pakistani cricket coach and former player who was born on February 28, 1975 in Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan. The 49-year-old stands 6 ft 1 in (185 cm) tall and he holds dual British citizenships.
A look at Azhar Mahmood’s career
Seeing what his son was doing in his early days, Azhar Mahmood’s father encouraged him to follow his passion even if he was against his playing cricket initially.
On September 16, 1996, he played in his first ODI match for Pakistan against India. On March 17, 2007 against Ireland, he participated in his final ODI match. On October 6, 1997, against South Africa, Azhar Mahmood made his Test debut for Pakistan while on May 31, 2001, against England, he played his last.
After serving as bowling coach for the Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans, the 49-year-old has extensive experience teaching in the Twenty20 format. He has been the head coach of Pakistan Super League champions Islamabad United since 2021.
Mahmood was appointed the bowling coach of Islamabad prior to the 2024 season, having previously served as head coach. He has experience playing county cricket in England as well as Test and ODI cricket for the Pakistan national cricket team.
In 164 international matches for Pakistan, Azhar claimed 162 wickets while amassing 2,421 runs. He served as the bowling coach for the Pakistan men’s cricket team from 2016 to 2019 in his previous role. His first task as head coach of the national team will be the series against New Zealand.
