Students are angry with the institution and their failure to provide enough support, which has led to such deaths.
Peaceful candle march in honor of IIT Delhi student Ayush Ashna
A peaceful candle march took place in honor of Ayush Ashna on July 13, Thursday. The march took place on the grounds of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. Ayush Ashna was a student of the institute who allegedly passed away recently. Amongst the attendees were several organisations and collectives like Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA) and All India Students’ Association (AISA).
The peaceful march began from the main building of the institute to the main gate, while students held placards, which read, “Arise, Awake and Educate” while others read “Ensure transparent probe into the institutional murder of Ayush Ashna”. Aside from demanding a fair and transparent trial, students are also demanding a reformation as well.
Sources have allegedly revealed to the Ambedkar collective that Ayush was a Dalit, an SC student from Bareilly, and not an ST student as initially assumed and communicated.
Ayush is survived by his parents and elder brother and his father works at a private firm while his mother is a homemaker.
Ayush Ashna, was a 20-year-old student who was pursuing a BTech in IIT Delhi. He was discovered dead in his hostel room on Sunday, July 9 with his cause of death still not verified. Police are currently investigating into the matter.
Family of Ayush Ashna speaks up
During the vigil, Ayush’s family and kin also stated how they are disheartened with the whole investigation process . Shainal Verma, a PhD Scholar from the Department of Humanities and Social Science shared how an official FIR is still yet to be filed.
The family also revealed how the cause of death is still not clear. Although officials claim that the cause of death was suicide, the victim’s family believe revealed the lack of clear evidence or proof. Meanwhile, the police have stated that there is no foul play involved. Ayush’s uncle shared:
We don’t want any further Ayushs in this institution”
Plans for next steps underway
Following the vigil, there are plans for next steps currently underway. Shainal Verma revealed about the next step stating:
The students planning for a press release soon to address the issue at large.”
She further added the disappointment that students have over the lack of representation, violation of reservation and the fake assurances that the administration have continued making.
The scholar further added:
We simply do not want responses but action. It is the time that such decisions materialise into reality.”
She further questioned the administration and their plans to improve the prevailing condition as deaths continue taking place. A group of students from IIT Delhi claimed how students and teachers alike are all concerned about what the institute had to say about Ayush Ashna. The institute stated that Ayush was an “introvert” and a person “who did not approach anyone”. The ignorance of the institute has left more and more students compelled to take their lives.
