According to reports, the cab driver attempted to flee the scene with the bicycle’s frame wedged under the front wheels of the cab. Saini, who hails from suburban Chembur, sustained serious injuries in the accident. His fellow cyclists rushed him to the hospital but he was declared dead upon arrival.
Avtar Saini’s contributions to microprocessor design are underscored by his seven patents in the field. Notably, he was responsible for the first phase development of Intel’s 64-bit architecture, the Itanium Processor.
With a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from VJTI, Mumbai, and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota, Avtar Saini joined Intel in April 1982 as a Product Engineer. He lost his wife few years back and at present was living alone in his Chembur home.
A member of the Chembur Amateur Cycling Group for a decade, Avtar Saini’s wife passed away three years ago and is survived by a son and a daughter, who live in the US.
Saini, aged 68 and a resident of Chembur, met with a fatal accident on Palm Beach Road in Nerul while cycling.
Soon after the accident, the cab driver Hrishikesh Khade attempted to flee the spot and drove the cab for nearly a km, but failed to go further as Saini’s cycle had got stuck under the car’s wheels.

His expertise extended to working on the Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors, and he was instrumental in the design of the iconic Pentium processor. The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the cab driver under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 279 for rash driving, Section 337 for causing hurt by negligent act endangering human life, and Section 304-A for causing death by a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide. Furthermore, the Motor Vehicles Act’s provisions have been invoked.
As of now, the accused cab driver has not been arrested. The investigation into the incident is currently underway, and additional details are awaited.
