Avishek Dalmiya New BCCI Representative
Abhishek or Avishek Dalmiya has been appointed as the BCCI representative to the Indian Premier League Governing Council. He will be replacing Mamon Majumdar of the Cricket Association of Mizoram.
Dalmiya was the former president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), one of the most influential state cricket bodies in India. He has been serving as the president of CAB for the last two years since February 2020.
Dalmiya will leave his post as the CAB president to take up his new position in the IPL GC. Following the new appointment, there are widespread speculations that Sourav Ganguly will make a return to CAB after clearing out his post as the president of BCCI.
Abhishek Dalmiya Brief Bio
Abhishek Dalmiya is the son of the former president of the BCCI and the ICC Jagmohan Dalmiya.
He is also the younger brother to Vaishali Dalmiya, the former Trinamool Congress MLA from the Bally constituency in Howrah, West Bengal.
Although, the Dalmiyas are not of Bengali origin, they have lived in Kolkata for a long time and have multiple businesses based in West Bengal. Koeli is married to Avishek, the son of legendary cricket administrator late Jagmohan Dalmiya. Avishek is aged between 45-55 years.
CAB Tenure
Back in February 2020, Dalmiya became the youngest ever CAB president. Sourav Ganguly’s brother Snehasish Ganguly, served as the joint secretary of CAB beside him. Snehasish is a former Bengal cricketer.
Abhishek Dalmiya is reportedly a close aide of the former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. In fact, his tenure in the CAB began when Ganguly became the BCCI president.
Even though Dalmiya’s tenure as president of the CAB initially ended in 2021, it underwent an extension after the CAB went to the Supreme Court of India seeking revisions to some of the Lodha committee guidelines.
According to the Lodha Committee’s recommendations and the revised constitution of the CAB, a person can serve as office-bearer in state cricket bodies for six years back-to-back.
