Oates was married to Raymond J Smith, a professor and editor of the Ontario Review for 47 years. In 2008, Smith tragically died from complications arising due to pneumonia. Her net worth stands at $19 million.

In that interview, She said, “I love working with language and (usually) imagining mediated voices in narratives of some complexity and originality, which can yield surprises in the writing and the opportunity to explore a kind of vivid alternate reality”.

Why Did Oates Write the Novel Blonde?

In an interview with CNN, Oates said that she had been inspired to write the book Blonde after seeing a photograph of Norma Jeane, the real name of actress Marilyn Monroe.

During her interview with CNN, She said, “I saw in her a quintessential American girl who looks nothing like the ‘Marilyn Monroe’ to come, with her platinum blonde, synthetic hair and exaggerated glamour.

My interest was exclusively in Norma Jean, who had brown, curly hair to her shoulders and a very sweet, pretty face that was not beautiful, but very attractive”.

Oates had seen the film and she described director Andrew Dominik as “a very brilliant director” during a discussion at the 21st Neuchâtel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland.

During the discussion, Oates said, “I think he succeeded in showing the experience of Norma Jeane Baker from her perspective, rather than see it from the outside, the male gaze looking at a woman.”
